ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ദേശീയഗാനം എഴുതിയതു രവീന്ദ്രനാഥ ടാഗാറാണെന്നു ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ഏതു കുട്ടിയ്ക്കും അറിയാം .

പക്ഷെ ,സ്കൂള്‍മുറ്റത്ത്‌ നമ്മള്‍ ചൊല്ലിയ ദേശീയപ്രതിജ്ഞയെഴുതിയ പൈദിമാരി വെങ്കിട്ട സുബ്ബറാവുവിനെ എത്രപേര്‍ അറിയും...

''ഇന്ത്യ എന്റെ രാജ്യമാണ് .എല്ലാ ഇന്ത്യക്കാരും എന്റെ സഹോദരീസഹോദരന്മാരാണ് .ഞാന്‍ എന്റെ രാജ്യത്തെ സ്നേഹിക്കുന്നു..സമ്പൂര്‍ണ്ണവും വൈവിധ്യപൂര്‍ണവുമായ അതിന്റെ പാരമ്പര്യത്തില്‍ .....''.അറിയാതെ കുട്ടിക്കാലത്തെ സ്കൂള്‍മുറ്റത്തേയ്ക്ക് നമ്മെ കൂട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്ന ഈ പ്രതിജ്ഞയുടെ കര്‍ത്താവായ വെങ്കിട്ട സുബ്ബറാവുവിനെ കുട്ടികള്‍ക്ക് മാത്രമല്ല ,നമ്മുടെ അദ്ധ്യാപകര്‍ക്കും വേണ്ടവിധം അറിയില്ല .

1947നു ശേഷമുള്ള ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ചരിത്രം ഒരു കുടുംബത്തിനുള്ളിലേക്ക് ചുരുക്കിയ ചരിത്രകാരന്മാര്‍ ഇദ്ദേഹത്തെപോലുള്ളവരെ അവഗണിച്ചതാകാം...

ഈ പ്രതിജ്ഞഎഴുതിയത് തന്റെ അച്ഛനാണെന്ന് സുബ്ബറാവുവിന്റെ മകന്‍ പി.വി.സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യം അറിയുന്നതുപോലും സുബ്ബറാവുവിന്റെ മരണശേഷമാണ്..
ആഡ്രയിലെ നല്‍ഗോണ്ട ജില്ലയിലെ അന്നപര്‍ത്തിയിലാണ് സുബ്ബറാവു ജനിച്ചത്‌..സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ ജീവനക്കാരനും ഭാഷാപണ്ഡിതനും എഴുത്തുകാരനുമായിരുന്ന സുബ്ബറാവു ,1962 ല്‍ ഇന്ത്യ-ചൈന യുദ്ധം നടക്കവേയാണ് ഈ പ്രതിജ്ഞ എഴുതുന്നത്‌.

യുദ്ധത്തിനിടെ ഇന്ത്യയുടെ മനസും ശരീരവും ഏകാഗ്രമാക്കണമെന്നു തോന്നിയ സുബ്ബറാവു തെലുങ്കിലാണ്,' ഇന്ത്യ എന്റെ രാജ്യമാണ് 'എന്ന് തുടങ്ങുന്ന വാചകങ്ങള്‍ എഴുതിയത്..വെറുതെ കുറിച്ചിട്ട ആ വാചകങ്ങള്‍ സുബ്ബറാവു തന്റെ സുഹൃത്തും രാഷ്ട്രീയപ്രവര്‍ത്തകനുമായിരുന്ന തെന്നതി വിശ്വനാഥത്തെ കാണിച്ചു..
അദ്ദേഹം ആ കുറിപ്പ് അന്നത്തെ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസമന്ത്രി പി.വി.ജി.രാജുവിനു നല്‍കി...ഇന്ത്യ എക്കാലവും ഏറ്റുചൊല്ലുന്ന പ്രതിജ്ഞയുടെ പ്രയാണം അവിടെ തുടങ്ങുന്നു..1964 ല്‍ ബാംഗലൂരില്‍ ചേര്‍ന്ന കേന്ദ്ര വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ ഉപദേശകസമിതി യോഗത്തില്‍ ചെയര്‍മാന്‍ എം.സി.ചഗ്ല ഈ പ്രതിജ്ഞ അവതരിപ്പിച്ചു..ദേശസ്നേഹം തുളുമ്പുന്ന ഈ വാചകങ്ങള്‍ ഇന്ത്യയിലെ എല്ലാ സ്കൂള്‍കുട്ടികളും പഠിക്കണമെന്നും ആഴ്ച്ചയിലോരിക്കലെങ്കിലും ചൊല്ലണമെന്നും നിര്‍ദേശിച്ചു..

ഏഴു പ്രാദേശിക ഭാഷകളില്‍ വിവര്‍ത്തനം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ട ഈ പ്രതിജ്ഞ അന്നുതൊട്ട് നമ്മുടെ പാഠപുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ ആദ്യതാളില്‍ അച്ചടിമഷിപുരണ്ടു കിടക്കുന്നു..

1965 ജനുവരി 26 റിപ്ലബ്ലിക് ദിനത്തിലാണ് സുബ്ബറാവുവിന്റെ അക്ഷരങ്ങള്‍ ദേശീയ പ്രതിജ്ഞയായി പ്രഖ്യാപിക്കുന്നത്..

വിശാഖപട്ടണത്തെ അന്നപൂര്‍ണ്ണ മുനിസിപ്പല്‍ കോര്‍പറേഷന്‍ ഹൈസ്കൂളില്‍ ഇന്ത്യയിലാദ്യമായി ആ പ്രതിജ്ഞ ചോല്ലപ്പെട്ടു...
പക്ഷെ , ഇതൊന്നും സുബ്ബറാവു അറിഞ്ഞിരുന്നില്ല .പേരക്കുട്ടിയെ സ്കൂളില്‍ കൊണ്ടുവിടാന്‍ പോയപ്പോള്‍ താനെഴുതിയ വാചകങ്ങള്‍ അസംബ്ലിയില്‍ ചൊല്ലുന്നത് സുബ്ബറാവു കേട്ടു..നൂറുകണക്കിന് കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങള്‍ അതേറ്റുചെല്ലുന്നത് ആഹ്ലാദത്തോടെ അറിഞ്ഞു..ആ ആഹ്ലാദത്തെ പക്വതകൊണ്ടും ദേശസ്നേഹംകൊണ്ടും പൊതിഞ്ഞോളിപ്പിച്ചു , സുബ്ബറാവു തന്റെ ജോലിയിലും സാഹിത്യപ്രവര്‍ത്തനത്തിലും മുഴുകി ജീവിതം തുടര്‍ന്നു..

1988 ല്‍ അദ്ദേഹം അന്തരിച്ചു..

ഇന്ത്യയിലെ കോടിക്കണക്കിനു പാഠപുസ്തകങ്ങളുടെ ആദ്യതാളില്‍ ഈ പ്രതിജ്ഞയുണ്ടെങ്കിലും അതിലൊന്നും പൈദിമാരി വെങ്കിട്ട സുബ്ബറാവു എന്ന പേരില്ല..കേന്ദ്ര മാനവവിഭവശേഷി മന്ത്രാലയത്തിന്റെ രേഖകളില്‍ മാത്രം ആ പേര് ഒതുങ്ങിപ്പോയി........

നമുക്കൊരിക്കല്‍കൂടി ആ അസംബ്ലിമുറ്റത്തേക്കു പോകാം..നെഞ്ചൊപ്പം അഭിമാനത്തോടെ വലതുകൈ ഉയര്‍ത്തി ഒരിക്കല്‍കൂടി പറയാം.......'ഇന്ത്യ എന്റെ രാജ്യമാണ്..എല്ലാ ഇന്ത്യക്കാരും എന്‍ടെ സഹോദരീ സഹോദരന്‍മാരാണ്.....

A Tribute to late Dr. Victor G.M. Pavamani, Former Principal of Malabar Christian College,Calicut(Kozhikode), Kerala, India

Dr. Victor G.M. Pavamani(George Martin) was one of the  illustrious sons of  the Basel Mission Community of Malabar,Kerala,India.He was born in a family steeped in the Christian traditions of that community.His father, The Rev.Isaac Pavamani was a Presbyter in the Basel Mission Church and served  congregations at Puthiyara,Codakkal& Chombala in Malabar. His mother,Rebecca Pavamani was a dedicated Christian and supported her husband's work through her involvement in Women's Prayer Groups and Visiting Sick&Elderly in the Church& beyond.Rev.Isaac Pavamani's younger brothers,Advocate Pavamani of Puthiyara(Freedom Fighter), Mr. John Pavamani(Head Master,B.E.M. High School, Palghat) and Rev. Moses Pavamani were all well known in the Basel Mission Community  of Malabar& in the community at large for their leadership & their dedication .

Born in Parapperi near Codakkal, Malabar Dr. Pavamani  had his university education  in Malabar Christian college and in Tambaram Madras Christian College.He earned B.A.(Hons.) and L.T.(teaching degree)from Madras University and the taught at M.C.College High School, Calicut where he endeared himself to his colleagues and his students.He was well known for his involvement in the extra curricular activities of the School& also of the M.C. College with Production of Dramas& organizing exhibitions.
In 1948, he left for USA to persue graduate studies(Ph.d.).If my memory serves me  well  a large group of his well wishers(MY father& myself included) gathered at the Calicut beach to bid him Bon Voyage where "Vittoo" or Pavamani Master as he was affectionately referred to got into a small boat and went towards an ocean liner waiting  a couple of miles away at sea to sail for USA.
By that time he had a family. He married Jane Clements(daughter of Mr.Thomas&Mrs.Lydis Clements).She and their two young boys, Dado(Dr.Victor Pavamani,now in Atlanta,USA) and Ivor(Mr. Ivor Pavamani, now in Markam,Toronto,Canada) continued to be in Calicut with Mr&Mrs. Clements,near Calicut Veterinary Hospital.
In 1953,Dr. Pavamani returned to Calicut with a PhD. degree from University of Washington,USA to the immense joy of his family& indeed of the community.
Soon afterwards,he was appointed Principal of Malabar Christian college(succeeding Mr. J.F.Thaddaeus under whom college remained a second grade college).He immediately went into the task of upgrading the college. Thanks to his yeomen service and tireless effort and the the high regard  they had for him the Syndicate of the Madras university granted permission for MCC,Calicut to upgrade & offer degree programs in 1956-57.Thus a long held dream of the Basel mission Community of Malabar to have their own First Grade college was realized and MCC, Calicut became the first such college in Calicut City proper.Generations of the Community that came after that owes a great debt of gratitude to Dr.Victor G.M. Pavamani for this singular achievement. In that period before Kerala State was formed getting permission from the Government of Madras and affiliation from Madras university were not easy tasks.
Because of Dr. Pavamani's efforts& the financial help from "Friends of Malabar Chistian College in USA" College was able to  construct new building necessary for the new Programs at a time financial  aid from Governments was hard to come by.
Dr. Pavamani went to USA for a  year or two in 1958-59 and returned to develop the college even further. He was involved in the CSI Diocesan&General Synod Committees and was the Manager of the Church Schools in the erstwhile Malabar district.. He was THE prominent member of the Malabar& South Canara Educational Society of the Basel Mission in India, the legal Governing Body of all our Church Schools&the College.His affiliation with the Rotary Club& the YMCA is well known.Malabar community embraced him as a leader with great vision, dynamism& Charisma.His association with leaders like Mr. K.P. Kesava Menon, Mr. P.P. Hassan Koya and Mr. K.P. Ramunni Menon all added colour& vitality to his carrer and also enhanced the standing Basel Mission had among the larger Community.He was also a well respected member of the Kerala university Synod& Syndicate.
In  1965,he, Mrs. Pavamani& son Ivor went to USA when  he accepted a Post Doctoral Fellowship there. After a couple of years he decided not to return to Calicut and accepted a professorship in Vancouver,Canada.
On February 20, 1978 while exercising at home Dr. Pavamani had a Cardiac arrest and Passed away. He was cremated at cemetery of St. Mark's Cathedral,Seattle,USA.
It is a previlege for me and Jamuna to be able to visit Mrs.Jane Pavamani occassionaly; she  makes her home in Toronto not very far from her son Mr. Ivor Pavamani.
Dr.Victor G.M. Pavamani was a mentor to me.While in Alwaye I was able to meet up with him often on his way to University meetings and share our dreams  and our objectives.
For many of my generation and for many who came later Dr. Pavamani was a shinning Star.The Community is hugely indebted to him.

Fire destroys St Sebastian’s Church New Delhi, foul play suspected

New Delhi, Dec 1: Foul play has been suspected after a fire destroyed a Catholic church in Delhi.
The mysterious fire on Monday morning reduced to ashes St Sebastian’s Church in Dilshad Garden that lies on the eastern extreme of the national capital.

“The fire has completely charred the sanctuary, sacristy and the first floor balcony,” Father Stanley Kozhichira, media director of Delhi archdiocese, told Matters India.
The news about the fire brought hundreds of people to the church situated outside the residential areas. The crowd stood on the road before the church building and prayed for peace and communal harmony. Later they marched to the local police station and staged a sit-in to protest police’s alleged slackness in dealing with the case.
After police officials promised to send a forensic team to probe the fire, the demonstrators shifted the venue to a road intersection near the Guru Teg Bahadursingh Hospital.
The fire seemed to have occurred between 5:30 am and 6:30 am during the guard change. The fire brigade came around 7:45 and doused the fire.
The church was opened on December 30, 2001, by then Archbishop Vincent Concessao of Delhi. It belongs to Delhi Latin rite archdiocese but also serves as worship place for the Syro-Malabar Catholics living in and around Dilshad Garden, one of the largest residential areas in Delhi.
Archbishop Kuriakose Bharanikulangara, who visited the church, said he suspected sabotage. The Syro-Malabar prelate said he had conducted Holy Communion and Confirmation for 17 children on Sunday. “It was painful to see the altar and sanctuary burned down the next day,” the prelate told Matters India.
The archbishop also said it was quite evident that the fire was not natural. “All Christian communities are aggrieved over this incident,” he added.
Veer Singh Diwas, a former legislator who rushed to the church, alleged the fire was preplanned. He told reporters that he found a window on the first floor open and someone might have thrown some inflammable material into the church through that opening. “We demand a complete enquiry into this incident,” he added.
The politician accused the police and administration for not taking up the matter seriously. “It is very sad that no police officer has come to the church even after four hours of reporting the case. Why is the administration so inactive? Whose permission do they need to take action?” he asked.
He condemned the incident as an attack on Christians, “a peaceful and responsible community” with whom he has worked for more than 15 years.
Father Kozhichira also agreed that the fire was a “purposeful attack on a holy place of a minority community. It is a shameful act of desecrating people’s faith,” he added.
The incident occurred in the backdrop of Delhi getting ready to elect its legislative assembly. The capital witnessed in October localized sectarian violence at three different places.
Fr Kozhichira said they found kerosene in the church’s attic and suspect that someone had used inflammable material to set fire to the church. “A natural fire would not be like this,” he asserted and pointed out that they found the fuse below under the balcony intact. “The smell of kerosene was still strong even after four hours,” he added.
The priest said they would protest until they get justice. “Our Constitution gives us the freedom to practice our faith and propagate it,” he adeed.
Jitender Singh Shunty, who represents Shahdara constituency in the Delhi Legislative Assembly, and Preeti Behan, local councilor, also visited the church to study the situation.
Later talking to media person, Shunty said he had inspected the scene and was convinced it was “a deliberate” act.
“They have destroyed each and every item, taking enough time. Whoever has done should be arrested soon,” the legislator said.
“This incident has hurt the sentiments of our Christian brothers, who are a peaceful community,” he said and added that any attack on a place of worship is an abominable act.

ലക്ഷ്മിയുടെ നേരിന് പൊന്നിനേക്കാള്‍ തിളക്കം

വാടാനപ്പള്ളി: പല വീടുകളില്‍നിന്ന് ശേഖരിച്ച പഴയ വസ്ത്രങ്ങള്‍ വില്‍പ്പനക്കാരന് നല്‍കാനെടുക്കുമ്പോഴാണ് അതില്‍ ഒരു ഷര്‍ട്ടിന്റെ പോക്കറ്റില്‍നിന്ന് അഞ്ചരപ്പവന്‍ തൂക്കമുള്ള സ്വര്‍ണ്ണമാല താഴെ വീണത്. ലക്ഷ്മിയെന്ന നാടോടിപ്പെണ്ണിന്റെ മനസ്സിളക്കാന്‍ ആ പൊന്നിന് കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല. തനിക്കും കുഞ്ഞിനും അന്നത്തിന് വഴി കണ്ടെത്താന്‍ പഴയ തുണികള്‍ ശേഖരിച്ച് വില്‍ക്കുന്ന ലക്ഷ്മിയുടെ നേരിന് സ്വര്‍ണ്ണത്തേക്കാള്‍ തിളക്കമുണ്ടായപ്പോള്‍ അഞ്ചേരി ഓടത്തുപറമ്പില്‍ അഭിലാഷിെന്റ ഭാര്യ ലിജിക്ക് താലിമാല തിരികെ കിട്ടി.

കണ്ണില്‍ കണ്ടതെല്ലാം കവരുന്നവരാണ് തന്റെ വര്‍ഗ്ഗക്കാരെന്ന സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ ധാരണയാണ് ലക്ഷ്മി തിരുത്തിയത്. നേരിന്റെ നാടോടിനന്മയ്ക്ക് പോലീസിന്റെ പ്രശംസയും ലഭിച്ചു. കോയമ്പത്തൂര്‍ക്കാരിയാണ് ലക്ഷ്മി. ഭര്‍ത്താവ് ഉപേക്ഷിച്ചുപോയി. മാതാപിതാക്കള്‍ നേരത്തെ മരിച്ചു. വര്‍ഷങ്ങളായി ഇടശ്ശേരി പടിഞ്ഞാറുള്ള വാടക ഷെഡ്ഡിലാണ് കഴിയുന്നത്. തൊഴിലിന്റെ ഭാഗമായി വ്യാഴാഴ്ച അഞ്ചേരി ഭാഗത്തെത്തിയ ലക്ഷ്മിക്ക് ഏതാനും വീട്ടുകാര്‍ പഴയ വസ്ത്രങ്ങള്‍ നല്‍കി. ലിജിയും വസ്ത്രങ്ങള്‍ നല്‍കിയിരുന്നു

താമസസ്ഥലത്ത് തിരിച്ചെത്തിയ ലക്ഷ്മി ശേഖരിച്ച തുണികള്‍ പഴയ വസ്ത്രങ്ങള്‍ വാങ്ങുന്ന അമ്പാടിക്ക് കൊടുക്കാന്‍ എടുത്തപ്പോഴാണ് ഒരു ഷര്‍ട്ടില്‍നിന്ന് സ്വര്‍ണ്ണമാല ലഭിച്ചത്. തന്റേതല്ലാത്ത മുതല്‍ ഉടമക്ക് തിരിച്ചെത്തിക്കണമെന്ന് തീരുമാനിക്കാന്‍ ലക്ഷ്മിക്ക് ഒട്ടും സമയം വേണ്ടിവന്നില്ല. പക്ഷേ, ആരുടേതാണെന്ന് അവള്‍ക്ക് മനസ്സിലായില്ല. ലക്ഷ്മി, ഷെഡ്ഡിനടുത്ത് ചായക്കട നടത്തുന്ന കൃഷ്ണന്റെ സഹായം തേടി. അമ്പാടിയും കൃഷ്ണനുമൊത്ത്് വ്യാഴാഴ്ച വൈകീട്ടു തന്നെ സ്വര്‍ണ്ണമാല വാടാനപ്പള്ളി സ്‌റ്റേഷനിലെത്തിച്ചു.

സ്വര്‍ണ്ണമാല നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടതറിഞ്ഞ ലിജിയും വീട്ടുകാരും ഇതിനിടെ വീട്ടിലാകെ തിരഞ്ഞു. ആലോചിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ ഷര്‍ട്ടിനുള്ളില്‍ പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ടാകുമെന്ന് തോന്നി. അലമാരയില്‍നിന്നാണ് പഴയ വസ്ത്രങ്ങള്‍ നാടോടിസ്ത്രീക്ക് നല്‍കിയത്. മാലയും അലമാരയിലായിരുന്നു. വാടാനപ്പള്ളി ഭാഗത്താണ് സ്ത്രീ താമസിക്കുന്നതെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞിരുന്നതിനാല്‍ വാടാനപ്പള്ളി പോലീസ് സ്‌റ്റേഷനിലെത്തി വിവരം പറഞ്ഞു.

എന്നാല്‍, ഞെട്ടിയത് ലിജിയായിരുന്നു. തന്റെ സ്വര്‍ണ്ണമാല ലക്ഷ്മി അവിടെ ഏല്‍പ്പിച്ചുവെന്നറിഞ്ഞപ്പോഴായിരുന്നു ഇത്. വെള്ളിയാഴ്ച രാവിലെ സ്‌റ്റേഷനില്‍ ലിജി എത്തിയപ്പോള്‍ ലക്ഷ്മി അവിടെയുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. എസ്.ഐ. സജിന്‍ ശശി, അഡീഷണല്‍ എസ്.ഐ. ടി.സി. കലാധരന്‍, സീനിയര്‍ സി.പി.ഒ. ടി. ജയകുമാര്‍, റൈറ്റര്‍ പി.എസ്. സുജിത്ത് എന്നിവരുടെ സാന്നിധ്യത്തില്‍ ലക്ഷ്മി ലിജിക്ക് സ്വര്‍ണ്ണമാല കൈമാറി.
