Rev.Dr.Oommen George- A SCAPE GOAT
Rev.Dr.Oommen George and his group was in Calicut on
Saturday the 8th of this month as part of his election campaign for the
Bishopric of NKD.He was giving a four page news letter titled"NKD
Bishop Election Bulletin".This news letter is printed and published by
Mr.Subhash Abel on behalf of Mahayidavaka Samrakshana
Samithi,Calicut. The editor has made an attempt to whitewash the
corruption, nepotism and partisan acts of the former Bishop and his
group(The editor is one among them). He was appointed by the former
Bishop as a guest teacher in the CSI Plus Two School, but was thrown out
of job when regular appointments were made, because he did not have the
required qualifications. He has levelled several allegations against
Rev.B.N.Fenn,which I would like to comment upon
1.Thalikulam
Land deal:-The entire deal was done by the former bishop and his
close associates and the property which was sold for
2.71 crore was registered in favour of the buyer for 92 lakhs by the
Bishop himself and Rev.B.N.Fenn who was the treasurer was threatened and
forced to put his sign as the co-signatory by the mafia.Bishop is the
first accused in the criminal case filed in the Chavakkad court. This
issue was discussed at length in the last Diocesan Council and
Rev.B.N.Fenn was re-elected as the Treasurer for an other term. The
people of NKD know the antecedents and credibility of Rev.B.N.Fenn and
we dont want an introduction by Rev.Dr.Oommen George.
2.
Federal Bank Loan against Alwaye Shopping Complex:-The allegation is
that Rev.Fenn took a loan of 40 lakhs by pledging the rent of Alwaye
shopping complex without the permission of the Executive Committee.I was
a member of the diocesan executive committee for the period from
2006-2010 and I can proclaim with full authority that the loan was taken
with the permission of the executive committee and it was taken for the
renovation and developmental works of CSI Mission Hospital
Codacal.Rev.T.I. James,the
present Synod Director was the Director of the hospital during that
period and I am sure he will be able to explain more about this.
The clarification to the other allegations will be given in my
future posts. The group is just aiming to tarnish the image of Rev.Fenn
and the present leadership of NKD and the platform of the election
campaigning is used to settle the scores. They did not find a person from
NKD, who they could present before the people as their candidate.Hence
they approached Rev.Dr.Oommen George. The group led by Bishop KPK is
making Rev.Dr.Oommen George a scape goat and they very well know that he
is not going to make it to the panel.Their only objective is to see
that Rev.Fenn does not become the next Bishop of NKD."Pavam Oommen
George achen ithu vellavum ariyunno".

- Vineeth Pulikkal and Varghese T Jacob Binu like this.
- James Wesley Hunt Subash Abel is a stooge of the KPK Group. So let Rev Oommen omaniyi nadikathirikkatte!
- Chacko Abraham Kunnathuparamban I have expressed my( our ) views very clearly in this forum. OK. We have given clear definition for 'Outsiders'. I am not repeating the same. Now the same 'outsiders' are ' invaders' are for us. Some of you may call it regionalism or something more than that. We won't mind. If you think the people in North Kerala Diocese is very narrow minded with 'regionalism' we will understand that you don't know 'anything or nothing' about this great Diocese. I trust you may aware about the past period of agony in this Diocese. At that crucial time what happened to this ' Outsiders' ? What was their contribution or crisis intervention of these so called people with great ' visionary' approach ? What is their views about that period ? reasons ? Who was primarily responsible for it ? What happened in January 2011, when Synod appointed an administrative committee. ? What happened in the following Diocesan Council elections ? OK. Forget it. Now what is the main agenda of these Outsiders' in this Diocese? What are their views on different issues ? Do you ever noticed election strategy of these people ? Why they tarnishing the elected Officers in the Diocese including Convener of Bishopric panel election ? What is their intention ?
- Ti James Dear Nibu Nibu Kuryan, I would like to clarify point number 2.
The Medical Board and the Finance Committee jointly met on March 4, 2009 and resolved the following decision.
“Resolved that the Chairman, the Rt. Rev. Dr. K.P. Kuruvilla, Bishop & Attorney and the Rev. B.N . Fenn, Diocesan Treasurer & Attorney be and they are hereby authoirzed to take rent securitization loan for a period of 10 years of Rs. 40 lakhs from the Federal Bank, Aluva as rent for the premises rented out to them in the CSI Diamond Arcade at Aluva”
It was also resolved to open a current account at Federal Bank, Tirur for the CSI Mission Hospital Codacal to be jointly operated by the Director, the Rev. T. I .James and the Medical Superintendent Dr. J. Periayan.
Rent securitization Loan of ` 40,00,000.00 was availed in two instalments (Rs.1500000/- and Rs.2500000/-) with interest @ BPLR - 2%, presently 12.75% for Rs. 40,00,000 (or at such other rates as may be charged by the Bank from time to time in accordance with the Reserve Bank of India directives and/or the practice of the Bank.)
The loan will be remitted as monthly rent due from the Federal Bank for the space occupied by them within the agreement period. The hospital has to repay the loan to the diocese.
The resolution of the joint meeting of Medical board and Finance committee was approved by the next executive committee meeting.. This is just for clarification.... - Abraham Nedumparambill Abraham Looking at the overall situation of NKD, it is sad to realize that the system has gone for a total rot : NOTHING SEEM TO WORK. I have even realized that the very Constitution that NKD redrafted and fostered is useless to save the NKD from a administrative standstill. What a system is this?
Believe me, a new Bishop when he is elected, will not be able to do his Office well. The confusion and the hurt feelings created by the out gone Bishop is so much that it will take a hundred years to heal. Even with all this pain, why are so many good men like Rev. Fenn, opting to become the next Bishop? I am wondering as to why so many senior Clergies like to become the Bishop in these troubled times and sleep on a bed of nails? - Jaajvel Eattikkal P Abraham Nedumparambill Abraham As I mentioned in this forum, the Synod needs to make a unified constitution for dioceses, because office bearers of some of the individual diocese's misuse their constituion for their selfish needs. There may be opposition from various quarters, but it is the need of the hour...Surely the people of NKD is hurt and it reflects in their opinion, but from my viewpoint I think a good leader can win back the NKD and its people...because when the going gets tough the tough gets going..
- Csipass Puthiyara The ex-bishop k.p.kuruvila supporters claim that the construction of few churches made because of the highness of the ex-bishop kuruvila.Who was the treasurer during that time.Rev.Fenn.How they can claim the whole credit!!!!! Their FOOLISH PROPAGANDA crosses the standard of a local society election.

Church call to end nuclear power in India: The Church of England Newspaper, November 29, 2012

The Church of South India has backed calls to decommission India’s nuclear power plants. In a statement released last week the Ecological Concerns Commission of the CSI’s General Synod said the church was in “full solidarity” the Koodankulam nuclear power plant protesters and wanted an end to nuclear power in India.
Construction has slowed to halt at the power station in Koodankulam in the Tirunelveli district of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu in the face of local protests. The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd and the Russian state corporation Atomstroyexport are building two 1 Gigawatt reactors at a projected cost of £2.2 billion. When completed the water-cooled reactors will be the largest atomic power plant in India.
In September 2010 the executive committee of the CSI’s General Synod issued a statement expressing “her deep solidarity” with the protestors and said the “huge radioactive accumulations at the plant site could become the principal causes of environmental and health hazards” in the event of a disaster. On 27 October 2011 the CSI Bishop in Thoothukudi-Nazareth JAD Jebachandran and approximately 100 clergy from his diocese joined local Roman Catholic leaders at Koodankulam offering their support to the anti-nuclear protestors.
But the moderator of the CSI, Bishop G. Davakadasham, said that the CSI’s House of Bishops at their 14 Feb 2012 meeting had declined to take a stand on the issue.
The 20 Nov 2012 statement from the Ecological Concerns Commission puts the issue back before the wider Indian church. They called for India to close down its nuclear power plants and begin work on renewable energy projects. They urged the government to invest in solar power and begin a nationwide education programme teaching villagers how to recycle, reduce pollution and conserve energy.

Kerala Catholics at ease with Abortion
K. P. M. BASHEER

APAVOIDABLE DEATH: A woman holds a picture of Savita Halappanavar during a candlelit vigil outside Belfast City Hall, Northern Ireland. Savita’s died because of ‘a combination of medical negligence and Irish abortion laws.’
Many couples in the community adopt medical termination of pregnancy for birth control
While the Catholic Church across the world opposes abortion and birth control, in Kerala, which has the largest Catholic community in India, birth control is a way of life, with couples widely adopting abortion as a means of birth control.
Kerala’s Catholics, arguably the most prosperous community in terms of wealth, education, number of professionals, representation in the administration and the capacity to influence government policies, has been enthusiastic about birth control as a means to a better future for the family for decades. Many commentators have pointed out that the small family norm had helped the Christian community achieve its current educational advancements as a small family could focus its attention and resources on educating fewer offspring. Better education, coupled with other factors, helped the community scale social and economic heights. Better empowerment of Christian women, through education and employment, than of women in other communities has been a direct offshoot of smaller families.
FAMILY PLANNING
Alphons Kannanthanam, former IAS officer and former MLA, says the Catholic community had long back adopted the government’s family planning and birth control measures wholeheartedly and has benefited from them. He told The Hindu that the Catholics were much more receptive to family planning and birth control than any other community in the country. He recalled that family planning had been most successful in Kottayam district, which had the largest Catholic population among all the 14 districts in Kerala.
“While I was the Collector of Kottayam for four years, I received the most support from Catholics in implementing family planning programmes,” he said.
Despite the strong stand taken by the Vatican against birth control, the different Catholic Rites in Kerala had been lukewarm about it as the community as a whole favoured small families. “Though the Catholics attend church every Sunday and revere the Pope, when it comes to economic decision-making, they go by their own economic interests,” Mr. Kannanthanam remarked. “Since fewer children make better economic sense, they naturally took to family planning and birth control in a big way.”
Healthcare professionals point out that the number of abortions (medical termination of pregnancy) being done in Kerala hospitals is very high. Married women sought abortions for spacing childbirths and for employment reasons. Though statistics are hard to come by, one source said that in her experience, Christian married women had an edge in those seeking abortion. This was for reasons of higher education, employment and job prospects abroad.
The huge majority of educated or employed women in Kerala, with not much divergence between religions, these days want to put an end to their fertility after the second child is born. “I invariably get a request from middle-class wives to ‘get it stopped’ before they enter the labour room,” a woman doctor said.
FALLING POPULATION
The Kerala Catholic Church, which had earlier soft-pedalled its stance on abortions and birth control, started taking a fresh view from the late 1990s. One reason was the aggressive campaign by the Vatican since 1995, and the other, more important, reason was demographics.
Church authorities noticed that in spite of the increasing prosperity and social visibility of Christians, their population was slowly shrinking. Census figures showed that the rate of growth of the Christian population was below the replacement level of 2.1 children per couple. The Church was directly hit by the fall in population — it found it hard to find children willing to become priests and nuns.
The Kerala Catholic Bishops Council (KCBC) has taken several steps to buck the trend: advocacy, incentives for couples opting for more children and children’s education support. It asked Catholic-run hospitals not to carry out abortions and discourage family planning operations. To step up the campaign against abortions, the council has set up a Pro-Life Movement under its Family Commission.
In the aftermath of Savita Halappanvar’s death in an Ireland hospital, which put the Catholic Church on the defensive over its “archaic” stand on abortion, the council has come out with a clarification.
“Abortion is the direct and intentional destruction of an unborn baby; abortion is murder of the unborn child,” the KCBC spokesman said in a statement. “Where any harm is caused, indirectly and unintentionally, to the health or life of the unborn child consequent on any medical treatment given to save the life of a pregnant woman, the same is not considered abortion. This is the stand taken by Catholic Church on this matter.”
QUESTION OF SIN
Fr. Paul Thelakat, consulting editor of Sathya Deepam and spokesperson for the Synod of Bishops of the Syro-Malabar Church, told The Hindu that the Church considered abortion a sin. But abortion could take place while treating the mother to save her life.
“This is surely not sinful,” he said. “Had the people concerned followed Catholic morality, Savita’s life could have perhaps been saved.”
Fr. Thelakat, however, regretted that the Church was being faulted for Savita’s death.
“It is sad and unfortunate that the Catholic Church’s morality is attacked on account of her death,” he said.
