Court overturns church college appointment: The Church of England Newspaper,

Tags: American College, Christopoher Asir, An Indian court has overturned the appointment of the head of the Church of South India’s American College, saying the late bishop in Madurai-Ramnad had colluded with his son-in-law to engineer the younger man’s appointment as principal.

Elected bishop in Madurai-Ramnad in 2003, Bishop Asir was also elected deputy moderator of the CSI in 2008.  In 2010 he stood for election as Moderator, but lost by 8 votes.

At the time of his death in February 2012, Bishop Christopher Asir had been fighting tax fraud charges brought by the Indian government. The District Revenue Collector of Madurai had charged the bishop with being part of a criminal ring that had defrauded the diocese of £925,000 by selling college land and pocketing the proceeds.

In response to a lawsuit brought by a member of the staff, on 15 Oct 2012 Justice Vinod Kumar Sharma quashed the appointment of M. Davamani Christober as principal of the church-owned college.  The court accepted the petitioner’s claim the bishop and his son-in-law had created a search committee composed of their cronies and had participated in subsequent board meetings “without revealing the fact that Mr. Christober had applied to the post of Principal as early as February 21, 2011. It is clear proof of collusion between the two.”

However, the court did not rule on the claim the appointment had been engineered to cover up the bishop’s alleged thefts.

മരണത്തെ തോല്‍പ്പിച്ച മലാല വീണ്ടും സ്നേഹത്തണലില്‍

 

ലണ്ടന്‍: താലിബാന്‍ ഭീകരരുടെ വെടിയുണ്ട ജീവന്‍ പാതി കവര്‍ന്ന മലാലയെ വീണ്ടും ജീവനോടെ കണ്ടപ്പോള്‍ മാതാപിതാക്കള്‍ക്ക് സന്തോഷമടക്കാനായില്ല. അവരുടെ കണ്ണുകള്‍ ആഹ്ലാദത്താല്‍ നിറഞ്ഞൊഴുകി. മലാലയ്ക്ക് ഈദ് ആശംസയുമായി വ്യാഴാഴ്ച രാത്രിയാണ് മാതാപിതാക്കളും രണ്ട് സഹോദരന്മാരും എത്തിയത്്. വിദഗ്ധചികിത്സയ്ക്ക് മലാലയെ പാകിസ്ഥാനില്‍നിന്ന് കഴിഞ്ഞയാഴ്ച ബ്രിട്ടനിലെ ക്വീന്‍ എലിസബത്ത് ആശുപത്രിയിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ടുവന്നശേഷം അവളെ ആദ്യമായി കാണുകയായിരുന്നു അവര്‍. രണ്ടാഴ്ചമുമ്പ് തലയ്ക്ക് വെടിയേറ്റ് ഗുരുതരാവസ്ഥയിലായപ്പോള്‍ മകള്‍ മരിക്കുമെന്നുതന്നെയാണ് കരുതിയതെന്ന് മലാലയുടെ പിതാവ് സിയാവുദ്ദീന്‍ യൂസഫ്സായി പറഞ്ഞു. കബറടക്കത്തിന് ഒരുക്കം നടത്താന്‍ സഹോദരനോട് നിര്‍ദേശിച്ചിരുന്നതായി അദ്ദേഹം വെളിപ്പെടുത്തി. എന്നാല്‍, ആവേശകരമായ വേഗത്തിലാണ് മലാല ഇപ്പോള്‍ സുഖംപ്രാപിക്കുന്നതെന്ന് സിയാവുദ്ദീന്‍ പറഞ്ഞു. മലാല എണീറ്റുനില്‍ക്കുകയും നടക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ട്. അവളുടെ അതിജീവനം ഒരത്ഭുതമാണ്. ശരിയായ സമയത്ത് ശരിയായ സ്ഥലത്ത് ശരിയായ ചികിത്സ ലഭിച്ചതാണ് തന്റെ മകളെ രക്ഷിച്ചതെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞ അദ്ദേഹം, മലാലയെ ചികിത്സിക്കുന്ന ഡോക്ടര്‍മാര്‍ക്ക് നന്ദി പറഞ്ഞു. സുഖമായശേഷം പാകിസ്ഥാനില്‍ തിരിച്ചെത്തി പഠനം തുടരാനാണ് മലാലയുടെ ദൃഢനിശ്ചയമെന്ന് സിയാവുദ്ദീന്‍ പറഞ്ഞു. അവള്‍ തന്റെമാത്രമല്ല എല്ലാവരുടെയും മകളാണ്. പെണ്‍കുട്ടികള്‍ക്ക് പഠനാവകാശത്തിന് പോരാടിയതിന് മതഭ്രാന്തന്മാരുടെ നോട്ടപ്പുള്ളിയായ പതിനാലുകാരി മലാലയ്ക്ക് ഇനിയും ദീര്‍ഘമായ ചികിത്സ വേണ്ടിവരും. നീക്കംചെയ്ത അസ്ഥികള്‍ പുനഃസ്ഥാപിച്ചോ ടൈറ്റാനിയം പ്ലേറ്റുകള്‍ ഉപയോഗിച്ചോ തലയോട്ടിയുടെ ഒരു ഭാഗം പുനര്‍നിര്‍മിക്കണം.

Bishop Election 2013

The Diocesan council of the CSI North Kerala will meet on the 9th of January at Calicut Cathedral to elect the Bishopric Panel.The committee headed by Mr. Jayapal Samuel(The Lay Secretary) is making all arrangements for the conduct of the election.The committee has to tackle several issues in order to conduct the election as per schedule.I would like to draw your attention to the following problems,which could stall the entire election,if not rectified urgently.

1. The Moderator should appoint a commissary urgently in place of the ailing Bishop

2. The ex-communication of six members of the Executive committee including two 
presbyters should be withdrawn and they should be allowed to participate in the 
election.
3. The representatives of the pastorates of Elamkulam and Kalamassery should be
allowed to participate and vote in the elections.
4. The suspension of Elamkulam and Kalamassery presbyters should be withdrawn.
5. The Moderators Commissary should convene the Diocesan Executive committee
and try and settle all long standing issues by mutual consultations and dialogues.

The Diocesan Officers along with the Moderators Commissary should try and restore normalcy in the Church before the conduct of the election.The situation should be made conducive for the fair and free conduct of Election.At present everything has been deliberately messed up in order to scuttle the election and to prevent a particular person becoming the next Bishop.This situation has to change and the people of NKD should be given a chance to elect their next Bishop.The people of NKD will not accept a person as Bishop from outside, by way of Synod appointment.
