The President of the Palestinian Authority has met with leaders of the Christian Churches of Britain in London following his talks with the British government over the stalled Middle East peace process.
The meeting between Mahmoud Abbas and Dr. Rowan Williams comes at a nadir in Anglo-Israeli relations and on the same day the Israeli Foreign Ministry chided Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg as being grossly “ill informed” about the conflict in the Middle East.
According to a statement released after the 17 Jan 2012, President Abbas told the church leaders that Israel and the Palestinians must resume peace talks.  The Arab Spring provided a “rare opportunity” to bring peace to the region, the Palestinian leader said.
President Abbas and Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams were joined by the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Liverpool Patrick Kelly and Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland David Arnott in the private meeting at Lambeth Palace.
Dr. Williams said the British church leaders “continue to share the hopes of the Palestinian leadership for a lasting and just peace in the Holy Land, and we pray for the courage on all sides to break the current deadlock.”
He noted that “young people in Israel and in the Palestinian territories long for justice and stability and they must not be let down. We were deeply grateful to President Abbas for taking time to share with us his concerns and aspirations” Dr. Williams said.
Archbishop Kelly, who last week travelled with other Catholic bishops to Israel and Palestine to meet with Christian leaders, said “we witnessed the effects of occupation and insecurity on the people of this land. There is an urgent need for strong and creative leadership in order to address the core issues of this long conflict.”
On 17 Jan, Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon told the Israel Hayom newspaper that Mr. Clegg’s accusation that Israel was carrying out “deliberate vandalism” by building settlements in disputed territories was “gratuitous and ill informed.”
The Deputy Prime Minister’s comments served to harm the peace process as it would allow the Palestinians to continue to refuse to negotiate or compromise.
At a London press conference on 16 Jan, Mr. Clegg standing alongside Mr. Abbas said: “The continued existence of illegal settlements risks making facts on the ground such that a two-state solution becomes unviable.”
“That, in turn, will do nothing to safeguard the security of Israel itself or of Israeli citizens. That is why I condemn the continued illegal settlement activity in the strongest possible terms,” he added.
Speaking through a translator, President Abbas told reporters, “This is exactly what we wanted to hear officially from the government of the United Kingdom.”
On Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the Palestinians had no interest in resuming peace talks. “For the last three years, the Palestinians have refused to enter negotiations, thinking they could impose preconditions upon us,” the Israeli press reported Mr. Netanyahu telling Israeli lawmakers at closed parliamentary committee meeting.
“The Palestinians have no interest in entering peace talks. I’m ready to travel now to Ramallah to start peace talks with Abu Mazen [Abbas], without preconditions. But the simple truth is that Abu Mazen is not ready.”

A trial court of the Church of South India (CSI) has found the Bishop in Coimbatore guilty of misconduct and directed he be removed from office and deposed from ordained ministry.
On 9 January 2012 the Moderator of the CSI, the Rt. Rev. S. Vasanthakumar released a letter written to the clergy of the diocese reporting that the synod court had “unanimously passed the sentence that Bishop Manickam Dorai cannot be continued as Diocesan Bishop any longer.”
The “Bishopric of the Coimbatore Diocese has become vacant with immediate effect,” the letter stated, and as per the CSI’s canons, the moderator of the CSI will serve as diocesan bishop until a new bishop is elected. Bishop Vasanthakumar asked the clergy to “kindly make an announcement of the above mentioned facts during the worship services in your churches” on 15 January.
On 2 July 2010 the executive committee of the CSI’s General Synod placed Bishop Dorai on an indefinite leave of absence and dissolved the diocese’s executive council. The bishop and his cronies were accused of embezzling diocesan funds and taking kickbacks on construction projects amounting to over £500,000.
An October 2010 report by a fact finding committee led by retired Karnataka High Court Justice Michael Saldhana found evidence of criminal behavior by the bishop. It said Bishop Dorai had pledged diocesan bank accounts, trust funds and pension funds as collateral for personal loans, sold admissions to diocesan schools, took kickbacks on building contracts and diverted diocesan funds for his personal use. They found the bishop had authorized the sale of diocesan property to real estate developers at approximately 20 per cent of their market value, in return for what the committee believed were kickbacks from the real estate developers.
“These transactions are not a mere case of mismanagement but point to rank dishonesty and criminality,” the committee said.
On 17 May 2011 the Crime Branch-CID of the Tamil Nadu Police filed a 500 page charge sheet with the Chief Magistrate in Coimbatore, accusing Bishop Dorai, his two brothers, and four other accomplices with defrauding his diocese of over £500,000. The former bishop’s criminal trial is expected to begin later this year sources tell The Church of England Newspaper.
The former bishop’s removal from the ministry must be affirmed by the CSI Synod executive committee, which is scheduled to meet later this month in Kanyakumari. However, his dismissal has already been enforced. When the former bishop attempted to enter last week’s meeting of the CSI General Synod, he was ejected.
Should Bishop Dorai seek a civil injunction to block his removal, the CCC – a lay anti-corruption advocacy group in the CSI – reports the “CSI Constitution states in Rule 28 of Chapter XI on ‘The discipline of the church and settlement of disputes’ that ‘No decision or judgment of the Court of the Synod shall be subject to appeal or revision by any person or court outside the Church of South India.’ Were Bishop Dorai to challenge his dismissal before the Madras High Court it would be interesting to see how this provision holds up as it appears to be prima facie in violation of the Indian [civil] Constitution.”

PROFESSOR ARTHUR J HARRIS passed-away on 18^th January 2012 in his native place, Marthandam at the age of 80

All the faculty members under the leadership of Dr. P. R. Anbudauari, Principal-in-charge and Secretary, The American College assembled in front of the Flint House at 11. AM to pay their last respects to the departed soul.

The condolence meeting started with a prayer by the Chaplain Dr. Barnabas. All the faculty, non-teaching staff members and retired professors - Prof. V. Srinivasan and Prof. D.Samuel Lawerence attended the meeting.

Dr. P. R. Anbuduari in his condolence message recalled the long and affectionate relationship of Professor Harris with the College and his colleagues.During his tenure, DR. P.R.A added that Prof. Harris also served the college as Hostel Warden, as a Member of the Governing Council for two terms. Dr. P.R.A observed him to be an out spoken, straight forward man whose primary concern was the college. All his colleagues used to affectionately call him -‘annachi’ (elder brother), a well deserved relationship he had with them all. Students, staff and even the Principals used to consult Professor Harris when ever they had a crisis or problem, Dr. P.R.A added.

Professor V. Srinivasan, Former Professor and Head, Department of Physics, The American College shared his academic and emotional bondage with Professor Harris. He gave a historical account and highlighted the contributions of Prof. Arthur Harris to college.

Following are some of the reminiscence Professor V.S shared with his colleagues during the condolence meeting…

Prof. Arthur Harris was a student in the College in the early forties (42-44 I think) in the BA Physics classes. (The course was called BA at that time and became B.Sc in the fifties). Later he went to the Middle East as a news paper reporter to cover the events of the Second World War. After the war was over he returned to India did his M.Sc in Rajasthan (Birla College, the present BITS, Pilani). He was a demonstrator in Madras Government service and was serving in a GovernmentCollege in Ananthapur, which is now in Andhra Prasesh. He joined The American College in June/July 1955 as a lecturer in Physics. After the retirement of Prof. E. S. Moses in 1970 he was appointed the Head of the UG Physics Department. In 1974 for a few months before he left the College he was holding additional charge as the Head of the PG Physics Department since Dr. R P Riesz was on furlough at that time. During his student days he was a nationalist and a follower of Nesamani, a Congress leader from Nagercoil.

He was the first Oberlin-Shansi Faculty rep from American College. Chose to travel by ship to USA and he is probably the only Oberlin rep to travel by ship. He spent an extra year in another college in USA (sorry I don’t recall the name of the institute, I think it is Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio not far from Oberlin) and did some graduate work in Physics. He was one of the wardens of our hostels (Washburn Hall) for many years.

Popularly known among the people of his age group and some youngsters as “annachi” he was a good friend and adviser for many of them. He was a good friend of Prof. K. Paramasivam (Former Professor and Head, Tamil Department, The American College). He played an important role in steering the students and faculty of the college in the right direction during the difficult times particularly at the time of the anti-Hindi agitation in 1964-65 and at times of student unrests for local reasons. He was considered a power centre in the College. The administration of the College used to ask a question what the Harris’s group think on any issue.

He was invited to be the Principal of Nesamani Christian College in his home town Marthandam and left the College in Nov 1974. He continued his association with the College serving as a member of the College Governing Council.

Dr.SUKUMAR AZHEEKODE-THE MAN WHO LOVED BASEL MISSION INSTITUTIONS.

 സാഹിത്യവിമര്‍ശകന്‍, പ്രഭാഷകന്‍, അധ്യാപകന്‍ എന്നീ നിലകളില്‍ കേരളീയ പൊതുമണ്ഡലത്തിലെ നിറസാന്നിധ്യമായിരുന്ന ഡോ.സുകുമാര്‍ അഴീക്കോട് (86) അന്തരിച്ചു. അര്‍ബുദരോഗബാധയെ തുടര്‍ന്ന് കുറച്ചുനാളായി ചികിത്സയിലായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം. ചൊവ്വാഴ്ച്ച രാവിലെ ആറ് മണിയോടെ തൃശൂരിലെ സ്വകാര്യ ആസ്പത്രിയില്‍ വെച്ചായിരുന്നു അന്ത്യം. രാവിലെ ഇരവിമംഗലത്തെ വീട്ടിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്ന മൃതദേഹം അവിടെ പൊതുദര്‍ശനത്തിനായി തൃശൂര്‍ സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി ഹാളിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ടുവരും. പിന്നീട് കോഴിക്കോട് ടൗണ്‍ഹാളിലും പൊതുദര്‍ശനത്തിന് വെക്കും. സംസ്‌കാരം ബുധനാഴ്ച്ച രാവിലെ കണ്ണൂരിലെ പയ്യാമ്പലത്ത് നടക്കുമെന്നാണ് ഇപ്പോള്‍ ലഭിക്കുന്ന വിവരം. സംസ്‌കാരസ്ഥലം സംബന്ധിച്ച് അന്തിമതീരുമാനമായിട്ടില്ല.

സാഹിത്യവിമര്‍ശനത്തിന് പുതുഭാവുകത്വം നല്‍കി പ്രമുഖ സാംസ്‌കാരികധാരയില്‍ തന്റേതായ ഇടം നേടിയെടുത്ത അഴീക്കോട് പിന്നീട് പ്രഭാഷണകലയിലെ അദ്വിതീയനായി മാറുകയായിരുന്നു. പ്രസംഗവേദിയില്‍ പതിയെ പതിയെ കത്തിക്കയറി സദസ്സിനെ കീഴടക്കുന്ന മനശാസ്ത്രത്തില്‍ അഴീക്കോട് മാഷ് ജ്വലിച്ചുനിന്നു എക്കാലവും. വലിയ തോതില്‍ ചര്‍ച്ച ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ട നിരവധി രചനകളും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റേതായി പിറന്നു.

ഖണ്ഡനവിമര്‍ശനത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച സൂചകമായി അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ജി.ശങ്കരക്കുറുപ്പ് വിമര്‍ശിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു എന്ന രചന ഉള്‍പ്പെടെയുള്ളവ അതിനുദാഹരണമാണ്. 1926 മേയ് 12ന് പനങ്കാവില്‍ ദാമോദരന്റെയും കോളോത്ത് തട്ടാരത്ത് മാധവിയമ്മയുടേയും മകനായി കണ്ണൂര്‍ ജില്ലയിലെ അഴീക്കോട്ടാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ജനനം. 1941ല്‍ ചിറയ്ക്കല്‍ രാജാസ് ഹൈസ്‌കൂളില്‍ നിന്ന് സ്‌കൂള്‍ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം പൂര്‍ത്തിയായി. 1946-ല്‍ സെന്റ് അലോഷ്യസ് കോളജില്‍ നിന്ന് ബികോം ബിരുദവും കോഴിക്കോട് ഗവ. ട്രെയിനിങ് കോളജില്‍നിന്നു ബിടി ബിരുദവും നേടി.

മലയാളത്തിലും സംസ്‌കൃതത്തിലും എം.എയും കേരള യൂണിവേഴ്‌സിറ്റിയില്‍നിന്നു പിഎച്ച്ഡിയും എടുത്തു. െ്രെപമറി തലം മുതല്‍ സര്‍വ്വകലാശാലയില്‍ വരെ അദ്ധ്യാപകനായി. 1948 ല്‍ ചിറക്കല്‍ പഠിച്ച സ്‌കൂളില്‍ തന്നെ അധ്യാപകനായാണ് ഔദ്യോഗിക ജീവിതം തുടങ്ങിയത്. പിന്നീട് കോഴിക്കോട് ദേവഗിരി സെന്റ് ജോസഫ്‌സ് കോളജില്‍ അധ്യാപകനായും മൂത്തകുന്നം എസ്.എന്‍.എം. ട്രെയിനിങ് കോളജ് പ്രിന്‍സിപ്പലായും പ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ചു. 1963 ല്‍ കോണ്‍ഗ്രസ് പ്രതിനിധിയായി തലശേരിയില്‍ നിന്ന് പാര്‍ലമെന്റിലേക്ക് മത്സരിച്ച് പരാജയപ്പെട്ടു.

1986 ല്‍ അദ്ധ്യപനരംഗത്ത് നിന്ന് വിരമിച്ചു. 1974-78 ല്‍ കാലിക്കറ്റ് സര്‍വകലാശാല പ്രോ-വൈസ് ചാന്‍സലറായും ആക്ടിങ് വൈസ് ചാന്‍സലറായും സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു. 1986 ല്‍ സര്‍വകലാശാലയിലെ മലയാള വിഭാഗം പ്രഫസറായി സര്‍വീസില്‍ നിന്നു വിരമിച്ചു. കാലിക്കറ്റ് യൂണിവേഴ്‌സിറ്റിയുടെ ആദ്യത്തെ എമരിറ്റസ് പ്രഫസര്‍, യു.ജി.സിയുടെ ഭാരതീയ ഭാഷാപഠനത്തിന്റെ പാനല്‍ അംഗം, കേന്ദ്ര-കേരള സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമികളില്‍ നിര്‍വാഹക സമിതി അംഗം എന്നീ നിലകളില്‍ പ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ചു.

ഉപനിഷത്തുകളുടെ സമഗ്രപഠനമായ തത്ത്വമസി ഉള്‍പ്പെടെ മുപ്പത്തിയഞ്ചിലേറെ കൃതികള്‍ രചിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. 1985 ല്‍ കേരള സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമിയുടെ വിമര്‍ശനത്തിനുള്ള അവാര്‍ഡ് 'മലയാള സാഹിത്യ വിമര്‍ശനം എന്ന കൃതിക്ക് ലഭിച്ചു. 'തത്ത്വമസി എന്ന കൃതി കേന്ദ്ര-കേരള സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി പുരസ്‌കാരങ്ങള്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെടെ 12 ഓളം ബഹുമതികള്‍ നേടി. മാതൃഭൂമി പുരസ്‌കാരം (2011), വയലാര്‍ അവാര്‍ഡ് (1989), രാജാജി അവാര്‍ഡ്, സുവര്‍ണ കൈരളി അവാര്‍ഡ്, പുത്തേഴന്‍ അവാര്‍ഡ് തുടങ്ങി ചെറുതും വലുതുമായ നിരവധി പുരസ്‌കാരങ്ങള്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ തേടിവന്നു.

കേരള സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി 1991 ല്‍ വിശിഷ്ടാംഗത്വം നല്‍കി ആദരിച്ചു. 2004 ല്‍ കേരള സര്‍ക്കാരിന്റെ എഴുത്തച്ഛന്‍ പുരസ്‌കാരം നേടി. നവഭാരതവേദി എന്ന സംഘടനയുടെ സ്ഥാപക പ്രസിഡന്റായിരുന്നു. ദീനബന്ധു, മലയാള ഹരിജന്‍, ദേശമിത്രം, നവയുഗം, ദിനപ്രഭ എന്നീ പത്രങ്ങളില്‍ പ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ചു. വര്‍ത്തമാനം ദിനപത്രത്തിന്റെ പത്രാധിപരായും പ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ചു. സമസ്ത കേരള സാഹിത്യ പരിഷത്ത് പ്രസിഡന്റ്, നാഷനല്‍ ബുക്ക് ട്രസ്റ്റ് ഓഫ് ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ചെയര്‍മാന്‍ എന്നീ പദവികളും വഹിച്ചു.

തത്ത്വമസി, അഴീക്കോടിന്റെ മൂന്ന് വിമര്‍ശനങ്ങള്‍, ആശാന്റെ സീതാകാവ്യം, രമണനും മലയാളകവിതയും, മഹാത്മാവിന്റെ മാര്‍ഗ്ഗം, പുരോഗമനസാഹിത്യവും മറ്റും, മലയാള സാഹിത്യവിമര്‍ശനം, ജി. ശങ്കര കുറുപ്പ് വിമര്‍ശിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു, വായനയുടെ സ്വര്‍ഗ്ഗത്തില്‍, മലയാള സാഹിത്യപഠനങ്ങള്‍, തത്ത്വവും മനുഷ്യനും, ഖണ്ഡനവും മണ്ഡനവും, എന്തിനു ഭാരതാംബേ, അഴീക്കോടിന്റെ പ്രഭാഷണങ്ങള്‍, അഴീക്കോടിന്റെ ഫലിതങ്ങള്‍, ഗുരുവിന്റെ ദുഃഖം,ആകാശം നഷ്ടപ്പെടുന്ന ഇന്ത്യ, പാതകള്‍ കാഴ്ചകള്‍, മഹാകവി ഉള്ളൂര്‍ എന്നിവയാണ് പ്രധാനകൃതികള്‍.

കേരള സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി അവാര്‍ഡ്, കേന്ദ്രസാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി പുരസ്‌കാരം, വയലാര്‍ അവാര്‍ഡ്, രാജാജി അവാര്‍ഡ് തുടങ്ങി 12 അവാര്‍ഡുകള്‍ തത്ത്വമസിക്ക് ലഭിച്ചു. കുമാരനാശാന്റെ ചിന്താവിഷ്ടയായ സീതയെ അടിസ്ഥാനപ്പെടുത്തിയെഴുതിയ ആശാന്റെ സീതാകാവ്യം ഒരു ഖണ്ഡകാവ്യത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് മാത്രമായി എഴുതപ്പെടുന്ന പ്രഥമസമഗ്രപഠനമാണ്. ഖണ്ഡനനിരൂപണത്തിലേക്ക് വഴി മാറുന്നത് ജി.ശങ്കരക്കുറുപ്പ് വിമര്‍ശിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു എന്ന കൃതിയിലൂടെയാണ്.

കാല്പനികതയുടെ ഹരിതമെഴുത്തുകാരന്‍ ചങ്ങമ്പുഴയും ഖണ്ഡനവിമര്‍ശനത്തിന് വിഷയമായിരുന്നു. തൃശൂരിലെ ഇരവിമംഗലത്തെ വീട്ടിലായിരുന്നു താമസം. ഒരുമാസത്തിലധികമായി ആസ്പത്രിയിലായിരുന്ന അഴീക്കോട് മാഷിനെ കാണാന്‍ പ്രശസ്തരും അപ്രശസ്തരുമായ നിരവധി പേര്‍ എത്തി. അതില്‍ അഴീക്കോടുമായി വാക്കുകള്‍ കൊണ്ട് ഏറ്റുമുട്ടിയവരുടെ സാന്നിധ്യമുണ്ടായിരുന്നതും ശ്രദ്ധയമായി.

HE WAS THE CHIEF GUEST OF THE GOLDEN JUBILEE CELEBRATION OF OUR CSI PUTHIYARA CHURCH IN 1980.WE STILL REMEMBER HIS SPEECH ON THAT OCCASION.HE PERSUADED EVERYBODY TO KEEP THE TRADITION AND GOODWILL OF 'BASEL MISSION' INSTITUTIONS.
