HISTORY OF OUR SCHOOLS-01 BEMHSS.Parappanangadi,Malappuram
BEM Higher Secondary School (Basel Evangelical Mission Higher Secondary School (Previously High School)), Parappanangadi is located at Parappanangadi village in Malappuram district, Kerala, India. It is the oldest school in this region. The institution came into existence as a primary school in 1904 to cater to the largely uneducated masses of the locality. The Basel Evangelical Mission, which started its missionary work in South India in 1839, was instrumental in giving new dimensions to education in Malabar.
By 1910, the school was known as B.G.M. (Basel German Mission) Elementary School. The local people were actively involved in the development of the institution. Cheramangalam Mana contributed about four acres of land for the school playground. In the mid-1940s, the Parappanangadi High School committee handed over the school allotted to it by the then Madras Government to the Basel Evangelical Mission, thus enabling the local children to have higher education in the town itself.
The school was renamed B.E.M. High School in 1947. Now, the school is under the control of the Church of South India Corporate Management (Malabar and Wayanad).
In olden days, boys and girls used to walk eight to 10 kilometres from places such as Thirurangadi, Vengara and Vallikunnu to reach the school. The school has actively promoted sports and games for boys and girls. It has won several trophies in football, volleyball, athletics, ball badminton, handball, throw ball and softball at the district and State levels[citation needed]. It is situated behind Parappanangadi Railway Station
Its alumni include many famous personalities around the society. In 2007, BEM High School celebrated its centenary anniversary[citation needed]. The Kerala State Government has approved a Higher secondary division for BEM High School from the year 2010. It is now known as BEM Higher Secondary School, Parappanangadi. The Education Minister of Kerala, P. K. Abdu Rabb is an alumnus of this school.

CSI--IN SOLIDARITY WITH KUDANKULAM NUCLEAR REACTOR STRUGGLE
the peopleCHURCH OF SOUTH INDIA RELEASES STATEMENT IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE 'HUNGER FAST' IN KUDANKULAM AGAINST KKNPPNUKE NOT KOODAMKULAM The ‘Church of South India, on behalf of more than 4 Million people of the Church of South India expresses her deep solidarity with the people who are engaged in an intense struggle in the Kudankulam district of Tamil Nadu in India against the nuclear power project. We, realize that proper rules were not followed in the construction of the Reactor, in a place where the population density is too high. We fear that the reactor effluents would kill the fish and further, that the other life inside the sea would be affected by the water discharged from the nuclear reactor into the Bay of Bengal. In fact, the area around the Kudankulam reactor, being home to a lot of small scale fishermen, we are afraid that their life and livelihood would be affected. We also express our concern over the huge radioactive accumulations at the plant site which could become the principal causes of environmental and health hazards. It is a known fact that the nuclear radio-active waste, are in fact an almost inextinguishable fire which contaminate the layer of the earth and living organisms, radiating energy in the forms of radiation and heat. We strongly denounce the move to set up the N-park in Kudankulam, which in fact is a tsunami-prone and quake-prone area. We join with the struggling communities in Idinthakarai and Kudankulam areas (and also in Jaitapur, Maharashtra) to whose livelihood, the Indo-Russian project, is incompatible. We demand that the Central and State Governments should hold a democratic and transparent national consultation on nuclear power projects in the country with proper assessment of economic, environmental and human cost of such expansion. It is a known fact that nuclear power has a bleak future, globally and therefore India must stop chasing the nuclear power mirage and drop Kudankulam and of course, Jaitapur too. It is true that energy can neither be created nor destroyed, but let us not forget that energy can destroy us. Are we gearing up toward another Chernobyl or Fukushima? In Solidarity courtesy-Rev.Viji verghese Eapen THE CHURCH OF SOUTH INDIA |
